Shore Excursions and Optional Tours
For those who enjoy the unusual and the picturesque combined with historical associations and folk-lore, American
Express Travel Service has arranged a programme of Shore Excursions and Optional Tours which embrace many diverse
attractions.
The Caronia will call at far-off Arctic outposts and European ports in lands of charm and scenic beauty that abound in
sagas of the north, in epics of the Vikings, and in medieval as well as modern history. The Cruise, in fact, affords
an opportunity to visit on one voyage many places that ordinarily could be visited only by making several long and
expensive journeys.
Make the Most of Time Ashore
Cruise members will therefore want to make the most of their time ashore and see what is most worthwhile and interesting
at each port of call. To enable cruise members to visit the principal sights of the port cities and their environs,
including points of historic interest, the shopping districts, and other attractions, with as much comfort and as
little inconvenience as possible, American Express has arranged a comprehensive group of Standard Shore Excursions
supplemented by a series of Optional Tours for those who desire to travel farther afield.
All of the Shore Excursions and Optional Tours will be under the guidance of experienced tour leaders. They are not
included in the fares for the cruise.
Advance Booking is Essential!
To ensure that as many passengers as possible may enjoy the shore programs, it is essential that careful arrangements
be made far in advance. This involves months of preparation.
In some instances special trains must be arranged for and must stand by with their operating crews ready for the arrival
of the cruise ship. Hotels and restaurants must be prepared to serve a large number of people with special meals.
Overnight hotel and sleeping car accommodations must be reserved months in advance.
These preparations and the planning of the daily operating schedules for a large number of people to conform with
arrival and departure times of the “Caronia” require untold negotiations and careful organisation. They are
necessary, however, in order to avoid confusion and to assure adequate facilities for a maximum number of passengers.
We urge you to register promptly for the Shore Excursions and Optional Tours of your choice. Reservations
will be made in the order of application. The shore programs will be operated under the direction of American Express
Travel Service, whose staff on board and representatives on shore will be at your service.
