1959 Great World Cruise
24 January Luncheon Menu
This is another page in this series of Caronia meal menu transcripts. It is for the Luncheon of 24 January 1959 on the Great World Cruise.
By this time, Caronia's cruise patterns have been fully established. This luncheon menu probably presents the epitome of what was offered on board at the height of her career. In later years, the impact of rationalisation would have some effect, so this really is as good as it gets!
Having worked in hotels ashore, one conscious thought now would be to always avoid the “Suggested Menu”. Items placed here would often be close to their “sell by date”, so any unsold would be consigned to the “ rosie ”.
Whether this policy was used on board Caronia or not, is a moot point, though unlikely! However, there is one comment I cannot avoid on this day's suggested menu. It's the main course. American Hamburgers (Note: not called Beefburgers!) prepared on the ship were definitely a crew favourite. Probably because they were made with freshly ground prime beef - they were delicious!
