Luxurious Staterooms…
Accommodation for First Class passengers aboard Cunard White Stars’ new 34,183 ton luxury liner Caronia, largest passenger ship built anywhere since the end of the war, is provided on Sun Deck, Main Deck, 'A' Deck and Restaurant Deck. The majority of cabins are “outboard” with natural lighting and ventilation in addition to mechanical ventilation and electric heating controllable by the individual passenger.
On the Main Deck amidships, sections of accommodation are arranged in suites. These comprise sitting room, bedroom, servants’ room, baggage room and private bath. The majority of staterooms have private bathrooms, and all have either bath or, shower in addition to normal hot and cold water services.
Every stateroom has a telephone offering immediate connection to points throughout the ship as well as facilities for ship-to-shore communication to any point in the World. Each stateroom has a silent electric clock which is controlled by an electrically wound master chronometer.
The general aim in designing the Caronia's staterooms has been the creation of space and simplicity as allied to choice timbers and rich fabrics, creating an overall effect of comfortable luxury.
Nowhere has the fitted furniture been allowed to climb into vertical proportions, for this would have meant undue emphasis where it was least needed. Contrasting vertical proportions have been restricted to such features as bed recesses, where closely spaced vertical panels of leather or wood suggest height.
Little items, such as a piece of wood sculpture in the right spot or a colour print by Gould, famous English bird artist and protegee of Queen Victoria, have been used to create the essential atmosphere of easy living.
