Although the Caronia was only ever an annual visitor to the many ports on her Great World Cruises, it was never the case that the crew remained detached from activities ashore.

Captain Thelwell was renown for how highly he thought of his crew and it would have no doubt been him that would have effected the introductions between Caronia's Boxing Team and no less than the Police Chief of Bombay. The photo above shows Red Doran against an unknown challenger at one of these matches.

In the group above, Peter Jelley has managed to identify Jimmy Ratchford (Masseur), Joey Hogan, Alan Reid, Terry McCormack (Referee), Red Doran and “Nasty” Henderson in this group around Captain Thelwell. On the left, wearing the boxing robe is Ernest Beyer from Liverpool. The chap in the boxing robe on the right is Bobbie Bell, an AB also from Liverpool.
