Below Decks Virtual Tour

Introduction

This Virtual Tour aims to take you around the decks where there was only limited access to passengers travelling on the “Green Goddess”. Below decks in this context means those decks that are below the fore and aft open decks.

This tour will very much be an ongoing “work in progress” mostly because I'm going to rely heavily upon others to feed in their recollections of these areas. Also, despite having been a hive of activity 24 hours a day, there is a dearth of photographic recording of what went on there.

The deck plan images come from the trade magazine “Shipbuilding and Shipping Record” published on 06 January 1949.

Brief Deck Descriptions

"R" Deck

The highest of the decks covered by this tour is Restaurant Deck. While there were the two passenger restaurants and fore and aft passenger accommodations situated on this deck, there were also several crew-only areas. For example, the main galley was sited between the two restaurants and the laundry situated aft of the Cabin Class staterooms.

"B" Deck

This was the deck where the main highway of all the behind the scenes work took place. This ship's artery is called the “Working Alleyway”. Both fore and aft there was crew accommodation, with accesses to the engine room and various work areas situated between. The ship's various hospitals were also placed on “B” deck.

"C" Deck

On this deck there was mostly stewards crew accommodation forward and a few Cabin Class passenger cabins aft, with various chilled food storage and preparation areas between. A large central section was occupied by the upper areas of the engine room.

"D" Deck

This was the lowest deck on the Caronia - given over mostly to the engine, boiler and generator rooms. Forward of this was the cargo hold and various stores. Aft was where the dry, tinned and bottled storage areas were, with a small passenger access area to the treatment rooms and gymnasium. A large baggage room was situated aft.
