The photographs on this page illustrate the 1965 Wareham & Bergen Trophy matches. Sent in by Chris Griffiths they show the celebrations of the victorious team. In 1965 the Balmoral Rangers won by 4 goals to nil. This match would be Chris’ last trip on the Caronia as a Junior rating.

The Balmoral Banner 1965

Carrying the team banner at the head of each team's parade was always assigned to the Junior ratings, and there was always some competition to have this honour. Here, Chris Griffiths (left) is seen with a colleague displaying their banner just before the game.

After 1964 Cup Fever Has Hit Bergen

Back on board ship before dinner, the victorious team gather to celebrate. The guys in uniform would have missed the match - they were members of the Afternoon Tea watch.

The Aftermath

The victory celebrations would go on well into the night. Having gathered in the Pig & Whistle for a drink or three, the final act of the day would be to await Caronia's departure from Bergen in the early hours for a “burial” ceremony.

A mock coffin bearing the losing team's name, on this occasion the Sandringham Restaurant, was processed down the working alleyway from the “Pig” at dead of night. Two junior ratings flank the mock bishop as they made their way to the aft crew deck for this “service”.
