A Range of Cruises for all Tastes

Although the Caronia was designed and used on long cruises from one to over three months, another popular market was for the short cruise of up to 12 days, aimed at people who could only spare two weeks away from home. Ranging from $295 to $1,200 per person these cruises would have a wider appeal than the “cruises to nowhere” also commonly known as booze cruises to avoid the restrictions to alcohol on land.

In these early years both Caronia and Mauretania would offer a range of similar cruises until a later pattern emerged where the transatlantic positioning crossing for Caronia's Great World Cruise would become a mini-cruise in itself.

For several of the early years, Caronia was away from the UK over both the Christmas and New Year holidays and then remained abroad for a further five or six months! To many of her crew this would have probably been quite a disincentive to stay with her.

Even the regular liners to Australia and back were only ever away for about 3 months at a time and would occasionally be in the UK for some part of these key holidays. Probably the only other ships to be away for so long would be the nomadic oil-tankers so the Caronia was quite unique in spending so much time away.
