The Millionnaires’ Yacht
Whilst at the time of writing the RMS Queen Mary 2 is being touted as the tallest, widest and fastest etc., in her day, the Caronia was being marketed at the totally opposite end of the scale. Her shape was purposely designed to make her look squat in the water. This was further enhanced by the application of lighter shades of the same “Cruising Green” the higher up that it was applied.
Even the single tripod mast complemented the effect. The picture below is taken from a brochure for the 111 day Great African Cruise of 1950. It's quite amazing to think that one of the largest merchant ships afloat at that time can be depicted here almost as if it was a model yacht.
Nevertheless her marketing and promotion was aimed to be a major attraction for the American Dollar. Along with her envied reputation of attracting the most wealthy to her decks, it was no wonder that the Green Goddess' other nickname was “The Millionnaires’ Yacht!”
