Bell Time on Shipboard

The twenty-four hours are divided at sea into “watches”, usually of four hours each. Time on board ship is marked by “bells”, the ship's bell being struck in single and double strokes, as shown in the table below.

Seven bells in these two Watches are struck 10 minutes earlier to allow the Watch next on duty time to have their breakfast and dinner respectively. One Bell is also struck at 3.45, 7.45, 11.45am. and pm. as warning to the Watch below, i.e. - off duty to prepare to relieve the deck punctually at Eight Bells.

The 12 hour clock was phased out in favour of the 24 hour system in the late 1950s.

Tonnage Explained
Cargo Tonnage
is either “weight” or “measurement.” The weight ton in the United States and in British Commonwealth countries is the English long or gross ton of 2,240 pounds. In France and other countries having the metric system, a weight ton is 2,204.6 pounds.
A “measurement” ton is usually 40 cubic feet, but in some instances a larger number of cubic feet is taken for a ton. Most ocean package freight is taken at weight or measurement (W/M), ship's option.
Deadweight Tonnage
expresses the number of tons of 2,240 pounds that a vessel can transport of cargo, stores and bunker fuel. It is the difference between the number of tons of water a vessel displaces “light” and the number of tons it displaces when submerged to the “load waterline”.
Deadweight Capacity
is used interchangeably with deadweight tonnage. A vessel's capacity for weight cargo is less than its total deadweight tonnage.
Displacement
Displacement of a vessel is the weight, in tons of 2,240 pounds, of the vessel and its contents.
Displacement is measured by calculating the weight of water mass that's pushed aside by a ship as it floats.
Displacement "light" is the weight of the vessel without stores, bunker fuel, or cargo.
Displacement "loaded" is the weight of the vessel, plus cargo, fuel and stores.
For a modern freight steamer the following relative tonnage figures would ordinarily be approximately correct:
  • net tonnage, 4,000;
  • gross tonnage, 6,000;
  • deadweight carrying capacity, 10,000;
  • displacement loaded, about 13,350
Gross Tonnage
applies to vessels, not to cargo. It is determined by dividing by 100 the contents, in cubic feet, of the vessel's closed-in spaces. A vessel ton is 100 cubic feet. The register of a vessel states both gross and net tonnage.
Net Tonnage

is a vessel's gross tonnage minus deductions of space occupied by accommodations for crew, by machinery for navigation, by the engine room, and fuel. A vessel's net tonnage expresses the space available for the accommodation of passengers and the stowage of cargo.

A ton of cargo, in most instances, occupies less than 100 cubic feet; hence the vessel's cargo tonnage may exceed the net tonnage, and, indeed, the tonnage of cargo carried is usually greater than the gross tonnage.

Latitude and Longitude
Latitude
means the “distance North or South of the Equator”
Longitude
means the distance East or West from the Meridian at Greenwich - near London.

Both are recorded in Degrees, Minutes and Seconds.

At the Equator a minute of longitude is equal to a nautical mile, but as the meridians converge above and below the Equator, meeting at the Poles, the size of a degree shortens.

Steaming Eastward a ship moves against the revolution of the Earth, thus her course makes her gain time, while if she were sailing to the Westward with the movement of the Earth she would lengthen her time.

Measuring Distance by Sound

In calm weather it's possible to determine by sound how far distant a passing ship is if she blows her whistle or in case of a warship, if she fires a gun.

  • If the steam from a vessel's whistle is seen and one second elapses, she is distant by slightly more than one-fifth of a mile;
  • If five seconds, a little more than one mile;
  • If ten seconds elapse before the sound is heard, she is just 2.1 miles off
  • If twenty seconds, 4.2 miles
