There was always a friendly rivalry between the two restaurants on board Caronia, and their
separate teams were always proud of the traditions that they built. This page carries
photographs that well illustrate this, where groups of people from the Sandringham
Restaurant are depicted in formal groups and ashore during periods of leave. In these far
more insular times of today, it seems astonishing that when on shore leave, groups of mates
would go on holiday together, rather than perhaps spend their time at home with their
families.
This group of happy guys include Arthur Bryant, Brian Still and Ronnie Greaves at the back along with Rex Everest, Pete
Jelley and Cyril Bennett in the foreground.

Another photograph from John Redhead where he has identified the Restaurant Manager Cyril
Wareham, Head Waiters Vic Henley and Colin Kitchen, Saloon Steward Jimmy Williams and the waiters that he
can remember: Tommy Coe, Pete Read, John Redhead, John Bantock, George Jones, Ray Walker, Red Doran and
Gordon Ramsey.
The photo was taken on Caronia's first visit to Bali in 1954.
Sandringham Supervision
Below is a photograph sent in by Tina Morgan, who is enquiring about her father Barry (Edward) Morgan.
One sporting tradition aboard Caronia was of course the annual football match between teams from the two restaurants.
The match between the Sandringham Dynamos and the Balmoral Rangers was only part of the fun, being preceded by a fancy
dress parade through the streets of Bergen.
This is where this highlight of the North Cape Cruise found its eventual home from 1957 onwards. In this photo a bunch
of Sandringham supporters line the route out of Bergen Docks. Note the Humphrey Bogart look-alike.

A Solemn but Enthusiastic Mock Burial
After every Sandringham versus Balmoral football match there would be a mock funeral procession to “bury”
the losing side. Here, on 02 March 1951 we see 6 of the Caronia's Commis Waiters surround the unidentified
“vicar”. They're about to proceed to the aft crew deck for the very first of these ceremonies on leaving Singapore.

As a former Commis myself, a wry smile crosses my face when I see the picture above, knowing of the devilment that

Peter Jelley has managed to identify Restaurant Manager Cyril Wareham, Head Waiters Colin
Kitchen and Vic Henley, Saloon Steward Jimmy Williams. Amongst the waiters are Terry
McCormack, Billy Bezant, Alan Reid and Pete Jelley.
