Caribbean Cruise Party 1957

It wasn't just on the long cruises that the crew found excuses to dress-up and party! Photo AQ03 seen below was taken on the Autumn Caribbean Cruise of 1957, the second of two 14 day cruises. Ave Quin has managed to identify Eddie Montague, Jim Shaw, Tony Bran and Alan Whitfield in this very cheerful group.

Christmas at Sea

Although the photograph below was not taken on board Caronia, it's placed here to serve two purposes. Firstly, whenever a ship was at sea over Christmas, it was traditional that the crew ate their dinner in the passenger restaurant, and be served by the ship's officers. There were even special menus printed for the occasion. Dinner for the passengers would have been served early on that evening.

Secondly, it's one of very few photographs that I currently have of me on board ship. After all, I expect you are wondering why I'm being so shy…

Whilst I'm not able to recall the names of the ladies or the Officer seen here, the guy in the middle is Paul, and the one on the right I believe is Kenny. We were all Commis Waiters, and yes, even as junior ratings back then, for this meal we were allowed to be served beer! On the dumb waiter is a classic Cunard water jug, and on the table some now much sought after pieces of Cunard glass and tableware.
