Caronia's Miscellaneous Sports Teams

This page brings together other sport and recreational activities enjoyed by crew members. Quite a number of people remain unidentified, and as is often the case, there are other questions raised. Notable among these is that until recently I was unaware of the rowing teams, and the only photo to hand is of the “Trojans” - what did the other rowing teams call themselves?

Swimming Club

Although I have no photographs of the Swimming Club members, I am pleased to have received this image of the sew-on cloth badge produced for the club.

Although several football and boxing team photographs of the Caronia crew have surfaced, these were not the only sports played on board. So far, no photographs of the rugby teams have come to light, however, Ave Quin has provided me with two shots of the water-polo teams taken at Breach Kandy, Bombay.

The ball is inscribed with “Breach Candy vs Coronia 1955”. Note that the mis-spelling is as painted on the ball! Even today, the number of people still spelling the name of the “Green Goddess” as RMS “Coronia” doesn't diminish!

I'm informed that there were rowing teams from several other departments on board the “Green Goddess”, but have no further information.

The subject of the Caronia Rowing Races is featured in full on the November 1960 page header.

Caronia's Darts Teams

Darts was another popular sport aboard the “Green Goddess” with teams formed from various work areas aboard the ship. In the photo below, Bill Adams from the Sandringham Restaurant is being presented his trophy by Captain Sorrell on the 1950 Great African Cruise.

These next two photographs were sent in by Jim Caslake, with several people remaining as unidentified.

Also, if anyone has any information about the Darts Shield featured in these pictures, I'd be delighted to hear from you - thanks! I'm guessing that it was donated to the teams by someone, but whom?
