Compared to the UK, the motor cars in the U.S.A. were huge, with a long bonnet (hood) and matching length of boot (trunk). Being able to hire a car in places like Hawaii was the ultimate in flash, well at least to get seen in a drop-top.

The next requirement was to be seen posing on no other place than Waikiki Beach - of course! John tells me that as they were driving around there were plots of land for sale everywhere, with boards advertising $10 deposit and $10 a month! Today, those plots are mostly occupied by skyscrapers.

By 1960, the surfboard was the vital piece of kit to be seen with on such a famous beach…

Ashore in Hamburg 1963

The overnight stay in Hamburg on the North Cape Cruise was always looked forward to by Caronia's crew. From the early 1960s, the nightlife in Hamburg was probably leading the way in a new cultural revolution. This was after all the city where the Beatles led an infamous lifestyle!

Ashore in Venice 1951/53..?

Don Miller-Watt poses a question with this photograph. Apparently taken in the early 1950s he claims that it was taken whilst he was on the Caronia. His question is: when?

Well, the answer is not simple because the first recorded arrival at Venice that I have for the “Green Goddess” isn't until early in 1955. This is around two years after this picture was taken.
