The island of Madeira, a Portuguese colony, is known the world over for its exquisite embroideries and laces, and the delectable wine that bears the name of the island. From Funchal, the colourful miniature capital, this day ashore includes a drive up the verdant mountains to Terreiro da Lucta, commanding a splendid scenic view of the island, the quaint town and the surrounding blue waters.
The descent can be made by basket-sled down a cobblestone path through the mountain greenery. A steep ride in an unique conveyance as thrilling as a bobsled run but perfectly safe; an experience that every visitor to Madeira remembers with pleasure.
Through the crooked little streets of Funchal there is another unusual drive in a native “carro” pulled by bullocks, to visit one of the interesting wine bodegas. Luncheon is served either at the Chalet Restaurant atop Terreiroda Lucta, or in Funchal at Reid's Hotel, a famous old hostel.
There is ample time for shopping in the many linen, lace and souvenir shops conveniently near the
landing place.

Itinerary
8:00am
The CARONIA is scheduled to arrive at Funchal.
9:00am
Group "A"
will leave the landing place by automobile, driving through the city of
Funchal and up the mountain road to Terreiro da Lucta for a magnificent panoramic view. Descend by native
basket sleds, a characteristic event of a visit to Madeira. At the foot of the toboggan run continue in
native carros (bullock sled) to Reid's Palace Hotel where luncheon will be served.
In the afternoon proceed by automobile to one of the famous wine bodegas in the centre of the town, within easy walking distance of the lace and embroidery shops or return to the nearby landing place.
9:30am
Group "B"
will leave the landing place by automobile, driving through Funchal and up the mountain road to
Terreiro da Lucta. Luncheon is taken at the picturesque Chalet Restaurant Esplanade on the mountain top.
After luncheon, descend by native basket sled and proceed by automobile or bullock cart to one of the famous wine bodegas which is near the principal shopping centre of Funchal. Passengers may visit the lace and embroidery shops or return to the nearby landing place.
5:00pm
The CARONIA will sail for Casablanca.
