I'd be very happy to receive additional photographs and any information that will identify persons as yet unknown.

sees Mike Baker (Gym Assistant, Barbara ? (Caronia telephonist) and Ave Quin (Gloryhole Steward) relaxing ashore in Villefranche.

Villefranche was always a popular port, especially with the “posers”! Here you could be seen with the “beautiful people” and pretend that you owned the “private yacht” in the bay as you sipped your drinks in the sun at one of the many bistro's that lined the boulevard.

Can you help with any information?

Submitted by former Glory Hole Steward Ave Quin (now in Guernsey) above is the last crew tender returning to Caronia, with its occupants a little worse for wear!

Yokohama with its permanent spring-time look! On the left in the photo above is Kenny Ayling. The other chap remains unidentified however. The streets of Yokohama were bedecked with artificial flowers on all the buildings as if to emulate cherry-blossom time.

Whether this was a permanent feature or not, I don't know. Perhaps someone local can tell us about whether there is a significance. Were they only put up for a short time to celebrate something, with the Caronia's arrival in April each year always co-inciding with it? Of course, out in the countryside it was cherry-blossom time!

Kobe in March 1954

Below is a photograph of Captain C S Williams with a group of visitors during the visit to Kobe on the Japan and South Pacific cruise of 1954. The photo was taken on the forward part of the Promenade Deck.

Whilst in port, the Captain and other leading Officers were often kept busy with entertaining visiting dignitaries. Sometimes, as a gesture of goodwill, these visitors would bring local people aboard with them, to bring a flavour of their country to the ship. Singing and or dancing shows would be then put on for both passengers and crew.
