Construction of this site has only been made possible by the willingness of people to make available material mostly created by Cunard's Publicity Department which, in those days, we disposed of without a second thought.
Since I launched the Caronia Timeline on 08 January 2004, I continue to be overwhelmed by the fantastic responses that it's generating, especially from those visitors who are so willing to freely contribute new information. These pages list their efforts in building the site, for which I extend a very hearty thank-you!
January 2008
It's always good to kick-off a new year on a high note, so my first acknowledgement of 2008 goes to Penny
Eastwood for her donation of several menus and programs from a September
1958 transatlantic crossing. They came to her from her Grandmother, Nellie Woodbridge who was on the
crossing.
Among these items was a very revealing Cabin Class Landing Arrangements for Southampton 18 September 1958 which confirms that passengers were accommodated overnight on board Caronia on arrival there. This wasn't just for special occasions like for the Coronation Cruise.
Coming through are several new photographs taken in the early 1960's by Robin Almond who was a Junior Assistant Purser with Cunard from June 1959 until September 1962 and spent most of 1960 on the Caronia doing the World Cruise, North Cape and Mediterranean Cruises. One of the first of Robin's pictures appears on the July 1960 page
My thanks to Chris Heaven for making available 3 pictures of Caronia at Southampton, taken on the day she sailed on her maiden voyage.
February 2008
My thanks to Jennie Hall for allowing me access to part of a lot of Caronia world cruise menus, now added
to the February 1959 page and the
March 1959 page
April 2008
It's taken a long while to find a photograph of a well-known Cunard Yanks watering-hole in New York, the
Market Diner, so my thanks to Chris Griffiths
for the loan of his photograph. A photograph of a very rare occasion has also been provided by Chris,
seeing the lifeboats of his ship being lowered from
the quayside, rather than from on board.
May 2008
Another collection of 20 photographs from Caronia's early period has been received from Alan Hargreaves,
who was 7th Engineer and Senior 7th Engineer on the “Green Goddess” in the early 1950's. Some
shots of Caronia's first Panama Canal transit
in 1951 are supplemented by photographs of Caronia's
Engineers seen on her Great World Cruise of 1951
Photographs are coming in thick and fast just recently, with more Deck Department images coming from Mally Pritchard and Terry Ryan.
